This Traditional Chinese Ink Painting is Actually a 3D Environment

Hard to believe, until you see it in motion.

As unbelievable as it may seem, the reason why the traditional Chinese-style ink painting displayed above appears to move is not your sleep-deprived mind, but rather because the entire painting is, in fact, a digital 3D environment, brought to life by the talented Environment Artist 安康.

Nearly indistinguishable from real-life ink paintings of the bygone era, the artwork was created as a personal project without using AI or any other form of foul play, depicting a stylized rendition of Lushan, also known as Mount Lu, a mountain with significant cultural and religious importance in Chinese history. According to the artist, the scene was set up using 3ds Max and Unreal Engine 5.

For those who might be interested, the text in the artwork is a poem titled "Written on the Wall of West Forest Temple" by Su Shi. It roughly translates as follows:

It's a range viewed in face and peaks viewed from the side,
Assuming different shapes viewed from far and wide.
Of Mountain Lu we cannot make out the true face,
For we are lost in the heart of the very place.

And if you'd like to turn your own 3D scenes into ink paintings, you can check out Zhihao Yao's InkTool, a neat add-on for Blender that lets you select a model, apply ink-like textures and outlines to it by simply pressing a couple of buttons, and tweak the post-processing settings to your liking.
