This Weird Forbidden Fruit Looks Like It Came From an Early Nintendo Game
ArtDanPol 3D's low-poly apple looks like an asset straight out of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Minecraft.
ArtDanPol 3D shared their animated 3D apple that looks like a Brazilian cherry, a star fruit, and a red apple hybrid. The weird forbidden fruit with 4 leaves and 4 stems was created in Blender. Users noted that this shape is similar to how Minecraft used to treat small objects in the scene.
The apple is a low-poly model, just like most creations from ArtDanPol 3D, since this is their specialty. In fact, it looks so low-poly it almost resembles Blender beginners' typical mistakes at the start of their modeling journey, except the creator is no beginner.
Although if you take a look at some of the replies to the original post from Haruko Hayakawa, low-poly apples are surprisingly difficult to craft. Others, however, say it doesn't take a genius to recreate the effect, as all it takes is a high-poly mesh and the desired low-resolution apple texture baked onto it.
As one of the users pointed out, they created a similar effect when working on a couple of game projects. "We just added a feature to the shader that dropped the opacity of geo being viewed from a shear angle. It fixes the "fan blades" that are pointing toward the viewer," they explained.
The effect is also similar to what you could see in early Nintendo games. As one of the users in the replies noted, in those games, the background elements looked like these weird multi-faceted objects because "the image always faced the camera, rotating on its axis to constantly look at you."
One of the examples is Nintendo's 1998 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. In the game, you can see low-poly vegetation that looks the same no matter where you turn.
