Todd Howard Says with Elder Scrolls 6, "We're Coming Back to That Classic Style That We've Missed"

Fallout 76 and Starfield were "a creative detour."

Bethesda

While Bethesda has a certain "signature", it has been exploring new horizons with its latest games. But don't worry: The Elder Scrolls 6 will return to the classics the studio is known for.

During Kinda Funny Gamescast, Todd Howard revealed that the company will be coming back from its "creative detour."

"If you look at our games, we've always evolved. We do have a certain style that we like, and our fans like, that we want to get better and better at," he said (via GamesRadar+). "I think in many ways, Fallout 76 and Starfield are a little bit of a creative detour from that classic Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Oblivion, where you're exploring a world in a certain way. And as we come back to Elder Scrolls 6 that we're doing now, we're coming back to that classic style that we've missed, that we know really well."

Bethesda has apparently spent two years improving Creation Engine 2, so CE 3, which powers TES 6, will "bring that detail close to the camera immediately." The team already has "a style of game that we really, really like" and that "people expect from us," but we won't see it "for a while yet."

"There's a lot of innovation to be done there still, so that when you step into a world, you feel like you're experiencing it, really, for the first time, a game like that. We're happy with where it's headed right now," Howard said.

For now, not a lot is known about the game, despite it being in development for years, with the location chosen during Fallout 4 creation. What we've learned is that it is "progressing really well" and will have more trees than Skyrim has
