Fortnite and Call of Duty refuse to give up their roles.

Every year, we see the same games among the most popular ones, but the situation might be even more static than you think. The analytics firm Circana revealed the top-5 most-played titles on PlayStation 5 and Xbox in the US in 2024 and 2025, and at first, you may believe there's something wrong with your eyes, or maybe the company copied and pasted the same information, but the truth is simpler: people play the same games every year.
2025's top-5 most-played games on US PlayStation ranked by % of active panel that played:

- Call of Duty
- GTA 5
- Roblox
- Minecraft
In 2024:
- Fortnite
- Call of Duty
- GTA 5
- Roblox
- Minecraft
Yes, they are identical. At least Xbox shows slightly different results. For 2025:

- Minecraft
- Roblox
And for 2024:
- Call of Duty

CoD lost its position in 2025, but other than that, not much has changed.
Aside from the popularity of live-service games, the reason behind such similar ranks is players' lack of time to invest in something new. Whatever you think of live-service conveyors, they appeal to a large number of people, at least those games that have been around for a while.
Back in 2023, it was unveiled that over a million PlayStation owners play Call of Duty exclusively, with no other titles crossing their play time. It might sound sad, but I can understand the appeal of quick matches after work.
