Unity 7 Has Been Announced

It promises to deliver faster workflows, an open and collaborative ecosystem, better graphics, and more.

Earlier this week at Unite Seoul, the company announced Unity 7, the next major version of its game engine, designed for a "faster-moving, more open industry where creators, cross-functional teams, and coding agents can seamlessly collaborate across every stage of the development cycle."

One of the most interesting parts of the announcement is that Unity 7 is expected to introduce no breaking changes for developers moving from Unity 6, as it serves as a "direct continuation of Unity 6 architecture, offering an upgrade path with zero rebuilding". You can expect a long-awaited modernized CoreCLR foundation, new rendering improvements such as real-time global illumination through Surface Cache GI, smarter growth and monetization tools with Unity Vector and IAP, and a new "open, collaborative ecosystem."

It's pitched as a new "CLI and public API" that allows artists, producers, and developers to "validate assets, push builds, and collaborate from their own tools, with no full Editor access required." Meanwhile, a free-to-use MCP will connect coding agents directly to Unity. Unity 7 will enter early beta testing in December, with the full release planned for Q1 2027.

The overall direction mirrors Unreal Engine 6's ambitions, but Unity appears to be taking a little more measured approach, avoiding major changes like Blueprint deprecation and tempering its messaging around generative AI. Meanwhile, there has also been an update on Unity's partnership with Epic Games to bring Unity experiences to Fortnite: this is Fantasy Kingdom, a Unity game rendering natively inside Unreal. The roadmap from Unity 6.3 LTS to Unity 7 has been made public, and you can access it here.
