Unity Developer Showcased Immersive Pseudo Volumetric Screen Space Fog

A fresh progress update from Alexey Testov.

It's been some time since we shared Alexey Testov's stunning untitled game project: he impressed us last year with his lighting shader and weather system. This time around, he's demonstrated a beautiful fog effect that currently only works from one perspective. Despite these limitations, the result is absolutely gorgeous.

"At its core, it's actually a fairly simple effect technically, especially since the camera in my game doesn't rotate, which removes about 90% of the complexity.

A fog distribution map is rendered into a render texture, driven by lots of parameters like current humidity, wind speed, time of day, and so on, so the weather affects the fog. That map is then projected onto the world in the same direction as the camera view. For the moving 'fog clouds', I take terrain height texture and erase some fog by height, so this ground fog stays dense near the ground and completely disappears a couple of meters up. That's the base. On top of that, I add a bunch of noise layers, lighting reactions, and various artistic tweaks, but that's mostly just coloring of the base effect," explained the developer.

Alexey's previous title, INMOST, an emotionally charged story-driven puzzle platformer featuring pixel art graphics, is available for PC and recently launched on mobile platforms as well:
