Unreal Engine 5.3 Preview Has Been Launched

Featuring faster rendering results, improved output times with Multi-Process Cook, enhanced ML Deformer, and more.

Epic Games has officially launched Unreal Engine 5.3 Preview, a peek into the upcoming UE5.3 update to their real-time 3D creation tool and game engine. This release further polishes the engine's workflows and capabilities, bolstering essential tools like Lumen, Nanite, Path Tracing, and more, allowing for improved performance and better visual results. Unreal Engine users will also see reductions in build times with Multi-Process Cook, enabling faster iterations on their projects.

In addition to refining existing features, Unreal Engine 5.3 brings an array of new experimental elements. Among the standout additions is the experimental support for orthographic rendering, as highlighted in the recently-released roadmap. This feature proves particularly valuable for architecture, manufacturing visualizations, and stylistic game projects. According to the team, "multiple areas of the engine have been fixed to achieve parity between perspective and orthographic projections", making it compatible with many of UE5's features, including Lumen, Nanite, Shadows, and TSR.

Another cool feature present in Unreal Engine 5.3 is Skeletal Editor, which enables its users to create skeletons and edit mesh skin weights directly in the Unreal Editor. The tool allows for the addition of bones to the assets and the deformation of Static Meshes, converting them to Skeletal Meshes without having to import any skeleton data.

Furthermore, the update also enhances the engine's ML Deformer, first introduced in Unreal Engine 5.2, adding a masking system for Local Neural Morph Model, improving the Nearest Neighbor model UI and workflow, removing the NNI framework dependency, and more.

The release also includes:

  • New tools for grooming hair and fur.
  • Updates for large landscape import/export.
  • New world-building tools.
  • Hierarchical generation.
  • Rule processing from external data.
  • The ability to use data outside of the Control Rig graph to procedurally create and modify the rig.
  • The ability to browse for Level Sequences from the virtual camera.
  • The ability to simulate and train cloth in the engine using the Experimental Panel Cloth Editor.
  • Updated Niagara Fluids toolset.
  • New modeling tools.
  • Enhanced audio tools.
  • And more!

Unreal Engine 5.3 Preview is available via the Epic Games Launcher, GitHub, and the official website. You can read the announcement here and check out the full list of UE5.3's new features and improvements over here
