Valve's Portal Prequel Resurfaces Online After Nearly Two Decades

Yes, it's fully playable.

Valve

F-Stop grew out of one of Valve's Directed Design Experiments in 2007, an initiative that divided the company into small teams tasked with developing experimental game concepts. It was envisioned as a prequel to the critically acclaimed puzzle-platform game Portal, and its gameplay centered on an Aperture Science camera that let players capture objects in the world and place them elsewhere to solve puzzles. The project was ultimately canceled, though some of its elements were later incorporated into Portal 2.

Well, F-Stop is now apparently back in its entirety, thanks to several leaks, including a massive one in August of more than 12 TB of Steam data, and the efforts of the Valve Cut Content Project's Discord community. According to Kotaku, the person behind the map leak initially asked for $1,000 but then decided to share the files for free. The Valve Cut Content Project team verified their authenticity and reconstructed the prototype into a playable version of F-Stop.

Direct access to the build seems somewhat unreliable, but several YouTube playthroughs have already emerged, suggesting the prototype is pretty stable despite missing textures and dialogue.

There is no indication that Valve plans to release F-Stop officially, so this may be the closest fans ever get to experiencing the game. It's fantastic to see such a piece of Valve's history preserved, even if the success of Portal 2 suggests that shelving the project may have been for the best.
