Xbox Head Doesn't Think a New Xbox Series X Is Needed

Phil Spencer says they see no need in a more powerful Xbox right now

In an interview with Bloomberg after the Xbox Games Showcase, Phil Spencer said that the company is not working on a new Xbox Series X console with upgraded hardware. That’s not the feedback we’re getting right now,” Spencer shared. “Right now, we’re pretty set on the hardware we have.”

While the companies have previously introduced major upgrades to their consoles after 3-4 years on the market, current generation supply issues caused by the Covid-19 pandemic hit adoption rates and may have impacted the timelines for any planned mid-cycle hardware refreshes.

However, there will be an improved model of the Series S. Microsoft revealed ‌a "carbon black" Series S with a 1TB SSD at the end of its presentation on June 11. The current Xbox Series S has 512GB of storage, which has received some negative comments from some players given the sizes of current-gen titles.

Launching on September 1, the black Xbox Series S will offer 1TB of storage instead. It will cost $349, which is $50 more than the 512GB model.

Recently, in an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Spencer said that Microsoft came in third behind Sony and Nintendo. Despite this, he insisted that the objective is still to provide users with games they want to play, whether it be on Xbox consoles, Game Pass, or on the cloud.

The competition appears to feel different for Xbox, who may not see the necessity for an improved Xbox Series X while Sony is developing a PlayStation 5 Pro system.
