JangaFX was founded in 2016 by Nick Seavert as a birthday gift to himself. Originally a real-time VFX artist in games, Nick was frustrated by how limited visual effects tools were at the time. He wanted to create tools that didn’t suck and were actually fun to use. Stable, crash-free, and real-time was the dream. Rather than accepting outside investment to fund the company — which would have put shareholders first and customers last — Nick bootstrapped JangaFX by maxing out credit cards, selling software, and working a full-time job in the industry. Morten Vassvik, the technical co-founder, joined the team in late 2017, and without him, the team would never have been able to build their tools.
The team’s first tool, a real-time vector field generator called VectorayGen, was released in 2017 and was met with strong praise. It helped JangaFX get its foot in the door at several large game studios and served as a stepping stone for their next product, EmberGen. VectorayGen was discontinued in 2023 due to limited future potential.
JangaFX’s flagship product, EmberGen, was released in 2019 and became the world’s first real-time volumetric fluid simulation tool built for production work. EmberGen has since been adopted by most AAA game studios and has been the key product funding the company’s growth. Over the years, as revenue increased, the JangaFX team continued investing in their people and grew to a team of 25.
To expand their innovative contributions to the industry, the team is now developing two new tools: LiquiGen and GeoGen. LiquiGen is a real-time liquid simulator, while GeoGen offers a fresh approach to real-time terrain and planet generation. Together, these tools form the Elemental Suite: Fire, Earth, and Water.
So what’s next? JangaFX aims to continue creating incredible tools for real-time VFX and environment artists working in games and film. The Elemental Suite will continue to grow, and the team hopes creators will choose it as their platform to Master the Elements.
