Alex Garland's live-action adaptation of the world's beloved ARPG is about to become A24's most expensive production ever. It surpasses A24's budget for its current most costly title, Marty Supreme, by over $100 million. The estimated spending for Elden Ring stands at $200 million, compared to a humble $70 million for Marty Supreme. This also makes the upcoming movie Garland's most expensive directorial project, with Civil War's $50 million looking like a small, cost-efficient production.
Elden Ring, developed by FromSoftware, came out in 2022. The game was a massive success, becoming the most-awarded title in the Game of the Year category. It received the title over 300 times, making it Game of the Year according to D.I.C.E. Awards, Game Developers Choice Awards, The Steam Awards, and others. Its 2025 spin-off, Nightreign, saw humbler numbers and fewer awards, and still, it sold 2 million copies in 24 hours and gathered tens of thousands of Steam reviews that stand at 'Very positive.'
What we know about the Elden Ring movie so far is that the cast includes Nick Offerman, Emma Laird, Tom Burke, Jonathan Pryce, Cailee Spaeny, and Ben Whishaw. Vince Gerardis, Andrew Macdonald, George R.R. Martin, Matthew Penry-Davey, Allon Reich, and Peter Rice are credited as movie producers. VFX are being carried out under the supervision of Jörundur Rafn Arnarson.
While principal photography started in the United Kingdom and the crew filmed in England, Scotland, and Wales, some scenes were shot in Iceland. Confirmed filming locations for Elden Ring include Dinorwic Quarry, Dolbadarn Castle, and Conwy Castle.
The movie is set to come out on March 3, 2028. Its mind-blowing budget, estimated by WSJ, might grow bigger during post-production, and we'll get the final price for A24's epic dark fantasy closer to the release date.
