An Animator Pays Tribute to Sousou no Frieren With a Stunning Fern Hair Rig

The artist recreated the mage prodigy's hairstyle using Hiroyuki Akasaki's new boneDynamicsNode.

Shortly after the airing of Sousou no Frieren Season 1's final episode, 3DCG Artist and Rigger known online as GACCHI has paid tribute to The Best Anime Series Of All Time™ with an impressive new 3D rig set up using Hiroyuki Akasaki's newly released boneDynamicsNode for Maya.

In case you missed it, the node in question lets you easily apply bone dynamics to joint chains in real-time and get smooth dynamic rigs that can shake in a lifelike manner. According to Akasaki, the setup supports four types of collisions (ground, sphere, capsule, and infinite plane), branching, and scale per section, allows you to manipulate the converging pose, lets you easily cancel the transform, and more.

Thanks to this node, GACCHI has created an extremely fluid hair rig for a digital model of Fern, a mage prodigy from the Frieren series, which closely resembles the original hairstyle in both appearance and movement, despite being entirely in 3D. Furthermore, the author praised Akasaki's tool for its ease of use and installation and is now planning to develop a script to incorporate the node into the animation process.
