An Iconic Dragon Ball Z Scene Reimagined in 3D With UE5

The author utilized a modified version of Ben Ayers' Genshin Impact shader to nail the anime aesthetics.

Florian Neumann, a well-known 3D Character Artist known for his stylized masterpieces, has once again paid tribute to Dragon Ball Z, showcasing a marvelous recreation of one of the most memorable moments from the legendary anime and manga series.

This time around, the creator reimagined the scene of young Gohan running away from a dinosaur in 3D, nailing the anime-like aesthetics despite the added extra dimension. According to Florian, the artwork was created to honor the legacy of Akira Toriyama, the creative mastermind behind the DBZ series, who sadly passed away earlier this year. "His vision has inspired generations, mine included, and it's bittersweet to present this artwork in his memory," commented the artist.

As for the software, the author utilized Maya for modeling, Substance 3D Painter for texturing, and Unreal Engine 5 for rendering. Additionally, Florian employed a modified version of Ben Ayers' Genshin Impact shader, which the author customized to enhance the artwork's details.

For context, here's how the scene looks in the actual anime:

Previously, Florian also showcased an impressive 3D model of Son Goku, the protagonist of the Dragon Ball series, made entirely in Maya and rendered with Unreal Engine:

And back in 2021, the artist joined 80 Level to tell us how his 3D post-apocalyptic crossbow model was made, discuss the modeling and texturing workflow, and explain why rendering is the most crucial step where you should never get lazy.
