Kiri Innovations has launched a new version of 3DGS Render, its comprehensive Gaussian Splat editing and rendering suite for Blender. A key highlight is support for animating Gaussian Splats inside Blender by baking motion from a proxy mesh. A demo scene is available for you to quickly test the feature.
3DGS Render 5.0 also addresses one of the key limitations of Gaussian Splatting: lighting is typically baked directly into the scanned data, making relighting difficult. You can now transfer lighting information from a proxy mesh to a 3DGS object. Please note that all of these features are experimental, so performance isn't great yet.
The update introduces a new 4DGS mode for exporting animated PLY sequences. Additionally, Blender 5.1 and above is now supported.
The 3DGS Render 5.0 documentation provides a detailed overview of all the new features and workflows. You can download the add-on here.
In case you missed it, Blender 5.2 LTS has just moved into beta, introducing Geometry Nodes physics for hair and cloth simulation, a new Thin Wall rendering mode, and other updates. Check out Pau Homs' video tutorial on the new Paint Filter node, which can turn renders into painterly images.
The industry's focus on 3D Gaussian Splatting is clearly growing: SideFX has just unveiled a preview of Houdini 22 featuring major support for it.
