Animating Ronin Character With 2D Thinking In 3D Scene

Pierrick Picaut has shared a few behind-the-scenes glimpses from his new animated short, The Chase.

Pierrick Picaut, a renowned Blender Animator and tutorial creator, has released a new animated short film to promote his upcoming course, along with several behind-the-scenes snippets featuring useful techniques. One of these offers a viewport look at the Ronin character, created by Antony Pico, and demonstrates how a 3D scene can be made to look like a 2D shot. The idea is to basically move the camera forward through the scene while keeping the character attached to it, with the character posed specifically to look right from the camera's perspective.

"Camera cheat: In this shot, the camera angle and focal length remain constant. It simply travels linearly through the canyon, with the character's root parented to the camera. The character is posed relative to the camera using a more traditional 2D approach."

Here, the animator used the camera to enhance the sense of impact, while adding 2D VFX using Grease Pencil:

You can watch The Chase below. Pierrick's new course is expected to be released on September 18, although its name and the topics it will cover have yet to be announced.
