Artist Recreates Baldur's Gate 3's Occlusion Shader in Godot

Check out Nando's fantastic recreation of the RPG's effect.

3D Artist Nando drew inspiration from the fantastic see-through-walls effect shown in Larian Studios' RPG Baldur's Gate 3 and showcased the recreation of the effect – an Occlusion Cutout Shader built in Godot 4.7.1 that lets you observe a character through walls or objects blocking the camera. The effect keeps gameplay visible without simply hiding the obstruction altogether.

According to Nando, the shader will likely be released on Godot Shaders soon, so stay tuned for updates.

Earlier, this effect from Larian Studios' RPG also inspired other artists. For example, Technical Artist Brendan "Sully" Sullivan recreated the effect in Unreal Engine and shared a breakdown of the feature:

A solo developer known as MetallCore999 showcased a Unity-powered dissolve shader with a similar effect:

Also, check out a custom occlusion system created for the upcoming mind-bending adventure Psych Rift by Ablaze Interactive, with which you can also see through the walls but in another way:

Godot 4.7 was released in June, and, if you missed it, Godot 4.8 is now in active development, with features such as the 3D trail node, a solution that adds node groups to the visual shader, and more to come.
