ArtStation and Sketchfab Have Been Acquired by KitBash

KitBash is bringing ArtStation and Sketchfab together with KitBash3D and Greyscalegorilla, while promising that existing portfolios, libraries, subscriptions, and core workflows will remain unchanged. Epic is consolidating its focus on Unreal Engine 6, Fortnite, and the Epic Games Store.

KitBash has officially acquired ArtStation and Sketchfab from Epic Games, bringing the massive artist portfolio and 3D publishing platforms under the same company as KitBash3D and Greyscalegorilla. The acquisition was announced today, with KitBash positioning the move as an opportunity to build a broader ecosystem supporting artists throughout the creative process.

ArtStation and Sketchfab have spent the past five years under Epic Games, but their new home already has significant ties to the 3D art and content creation industries. KitBash3D provides extensive libraries of production-ready 3D assets and environments, while Greyscalegorilla specializes in materials, plugins, training, and other tools for 3D artists and motion designers.

As of the time of this writing, Epic Games is still mentioned in the footer of the ArtStation website.

KitBash describes the combination as a more connected ecosystem spanning different stages of the creative process, from learning techniques and creating assets to publishing work, discovering artists, and building careers.

"We've always believed that the right tools can expand what's possible for artists, helping them turn concepts into entire worlds. ArtStation and Sketchfab have long been places where artists share their work, find inspiration, and connect with one another."

- KitBash Co-CEO Banks Boutté

KitBash says there will be no immediate changes to how creators access or use ArtStation and Sketchfab. Existing portfolios, libraries, and core workflows will continue operating as they currently do. Likewise, existing KitBash3D and Cargo customers will retain their Kits, assets, Cargo access, and subscriptions.

According to Epic Games, ArtStation and Sketchfab are joining KitBash as Epic continues prioritizing development of Unreal Engine 6, Fortnite, its wider developer ecosystem, and the Epic Games Store. The timing is particularly notable following Epic's recent discussions surrounding the "road to Unreal Engine 6" and its long-term plans to bring Unreal Engine and the technology powering Fortnite and UEFN closer together.

“ArtStation and Sketchfab are go-to platforms for artists to share and manage their art. KitBash will expand opportunities for artists at every stage of their creation process to connect and showcase their work in new ways. KitBash and Epic have had a longstanding partnership and we look forward to continuing to work together to offer open and accessible platforms for all creators.”

- Bill Clifford, SVP of the Unreal Ecosystem at Epic Games

Notably, today's announcement specifically concerns ArtStation and Sketchfab. Epic's statement does not announce any ownership change involving Fab, its digital asset marketplace. 80LV reached out to Epic Games for comment, and we were directed to Epic CEO Tim Sweeney's posts on Twitter/X:

Following today's news, KitBash now has platforms spanning production-ready 3D assets, materials, creative tools, education, portfolios, publishing, artist discovery, and online 3D content. Epic, meanwhile, is explicitly focusing its resources on Unreal Engine 6, Fortnite, its developer ecosystem, and the Epic Games Store.
