Game Developer and Technical Artist passivestar shared a useful trick for imitating lighting in 3D scenes without complex setups.
In the demo video above, the artist demonstrated that emissive decals can be used as a lightweight alternative to traditional light sources, allowing for achieving convincing lighting effects with minimal performance.
This approach can be particularly useful in game environments where optimizing lighting setup counts is important.
The artist also showcased another creative application of decals, this time using them to imitate water:
