Developer Shows Custom Godot Map Editor for Unannounced Project
Check out how samsfacee created the setup.
Developer samsfacee showed an eye-catching Godot setup – a map editor for an unannounced project, created with an editor plug-in. samsfacee humorously noted that the map looks like a cozy world of Tiny Glade, and indeed, it appears similar, with its ground-editing features.
As for the technical part, samsfacee explained that the map is built by placing abstract tiles in Godot 4.x's tilemap system. A tool script then detects changes to that tilemap and generates the stylized 3D version automatically. The split-screen view comes from the plugin that adds a SubViewportContainer with its own camera. The developer suspects this workflow might technically be a bug, but it works.
The tree and grass sprites are hand-drawn, while the ground and roads use a shader that blends multiple textures, similar to traditional vertex painting.
samsfacee is known for creating Space Bandit, a twin-stick shooter with roguelite and sci-fi-themed elements, and the developer said a new update for the game is ready. Another developer's project is the WIP open-world survivors-lite adventure Bandwagon, in which you build a band and restore joy to a grumpy world.
