id Software, the developer of multiple classic titles such as Doom, Wolfenstein, and more, might be returning to one of its most popular franchises, Quake, long after we last heard about its entries.
A report says that there were rumors for a long time that the developer might be working on Quake or Hexen, as all the rights to the titles now belong to Microsoft. If that's true, a title could be revealed at Bethesda's Quakecon event, while the big announcements might break in the Xbox Showcase.
The most recent release in the Quake franchise was an open-source remastered version of Quake II in 2023, with the latest original title being Quake Champions, launched in 2022. As for the Hexen series, the last title was released in 1997.
In recent years, the most significant release from id Software was DOOM: The Dark Ages (2025), which told the story before the events of other titles in the legendary franchise, Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal (2020), and featured brand-new assets and enhanced visuals. Before, we shared with you the developers' showcase highlighting the project's detailed world and expressive characters.
