Chico Spans has published a new book on vegetation creation and shared a beautiful 3D environment set up using the techniques explained in the tome.
If you've always wanted to learn how to create lush, vibrant greenery for video games but didn't know where to start, check out Creating High-Quality Vegetation for Games, a new book published by Senior Vegetation and Environment Artist at DEAD ASTRONAUTS and former Vegetation Artist at Epic Games, Chico Spans.
Described as a start-to-finish guide on how to build high-quality vegetation for video games, the book provides readers with essential principles and practical skills to confidently build natural environments from the ground up.
Chapters cover everything from planning and collecting references, creating varied and natural-looking ground cover, and procedurally building trees, to setting up a realistic wind shader and assembling all assets in a scene using Unreal Engine 5. According to the author, the tome is intended both for beginner artists who want to learn how to create high-quality vegetation, as well as for more experienced creators aiming to sharpen their skills.
Being an experienced creator himself, Chico promoted the book in the most appropriate way imaginable – by showcasing a beautiful 3D environment set up using the techniques explained in the tome. Depicting a mesmerizing beech forest, the scene was set up using photogrammetry assets, SpeedTree, RealityCapture, Blender, Substance 3D Designer, Megascans, and Unreal Engine 5. Attached below are some of the renders and WIP shots shared by the creator:
