Learn to Make Hand-Painted Watercolor Textures for 3D Scenes with This Tutorial Series
Beno Raistrick released a 5-part beginner-friendly tutorial series on transferring real-life hand-painted textures into 3D spaces.
Beno Raistrick made a 5-part YouTube tutorial series showing how to make textures for 3D scenes from watercolor paintings. If you prefer acrylic paint, oil pastels, or wax crayons instead, the same principles apply, so the choice is yours.
As the artist explains, this tutorial series is beginner-friendly, although some basic knowledge of 3D software is needed, because it's not a detailed step-by-step guide. He also emphasizes that all the instruments used for this project are free. In these tutorials, Raistrick uses Krita to edit the scanned paintings, Blender to create the assets, and Unreal Engine to assemble the scene.

For the 3D part of the project, the artist first blocks out the building in the scene using box modeling, with a basic mannequin placed into the environment for scale. Once the asset is ready, Raistrick takes it to Unreal Engine, where he finishes off the modeling process by adding finer details like windows and roof tiles.
To assemble the collection of hand-painted textures, the artist paints them all separately. He creates a set of textures for the walls of the building, another set for the windows, and one more for the roof tiles. To add variety to the final 3D scene, he makes sure to have several different hand-painted patterns for each part of the asset.

Raistrick then takes them to Krita to make texture maps from the scanned paintings. There, all the color adjustments and tileable texture assembly take place.
Once they are ready, he takes them to Blender and creates a texture atlas by adding a new material on top of the regular flat white material and assigning Image Texture as its Base Color. He then puts the textures onto the selected parts of the asset and corrects their positioning.
