Make Your Aseprite Drawings Behave Like Cloth

Draw the shape, set the anchor and wind, and let Heos Cloth animate it.

Pixel artists can be magicians sometimes: this is physics running through a Lua script inside a pixel art editor. It's not 3D or pre-rendered: it's just math simulating fabric. Obviously, it's not as powerful as a proper 3D render, but it's very cool and could be perfect for flags, banners, curtains, and some garments.

You control how the fabric hangs, moves, and interacts with the world, while the simulation handles stretching, folding, twisting, and collisions with surfaces. Even the shading and damage are handled as part of the same process. Heosphorus' Heos Cloth only works inside Aseprite, though, you can't run it as a standalone app or use it in other programs.

Workflow:

  1. Draw the cloth: Paint the flat fabric on any visible layer or group. You can split the drawing across line, colour, and shading layers — Heos Cloth composites them all.
  2. Choose an Anchor: Pick how the cloth is held. Top edge, corners, custom magenta pins, or none at all for a free‑fall drop.
  3. Pick a Preset: Flag, Bedsheet, Cape, Curtain, Burning flag, and many more — each tuned for a specific fabric and behaviour.
  4. Adjust parameters: Tweak stiffness, wind, shading, damage timing, or anchor motion to match your scene.
  5. Press Allons-y!: The simulation runs, generating a full frame‑by‑frame animation on the Heos_Cloth layer. Everything else is hidden; Clear brings it back.

The developer says the tool behaves as expected about 80% of the time, while the other 20% takes a bit of tweaking. It's a real-time physics simulator running inside Aseprite, not a production physics engine, so it's not trying to be perfect.

Heos Cloth requires Aseprite 1.3.x or later and works with RGB color mode. Indexed-color sprites aren't supported. Read how it works and get it here.

Hopefully, we'll hear from Easymetric soon. It's another fantastic Aseprite plug-in for making isometric pixel art:
