The quick tutorial includes the whole the example of stacking the deformers in 3Ds Max first, then switches to Maya and gives an in-depth explanation of each step of the process. For Maya, you’ll have to work with shape nodes to create a connection from one mesh to another. The video also comes with the trick in action used on the character’s facial features.
With this approach, you’ll be able to preview with few deformers added and still have an ability to work on the base mesh. Such a workflow will be useful for retopology, creating a shell or modifier to add thickness.
