A new DLC, introducing six new characters, is coming this September, and fan-favorite Animalities will return for free.

Mortal Kombat 1, the 2023 fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios, is set to receive a massive content update, according to the studio's Chief Creative Officer and Co-Creator of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon. The announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con, where Boon detailed the upcoming DLC, Khaos Reigns, and other content planned for the next year.
The Khaos Reigns DLC, scheduled for release on September 24, just after the one-year anniversary of the game, will feature an extension of Mortal Kombat 1's genre-defining story mode, centering around themes of peace and anarchy. Additionally, the DLC will introduce six new characters to the roster, the same as what was revealed by the data miner last month. These include T-1000 from Terminator, Ghostface, Conan the Barbarian, Noob Saibot, Sektor, and Cyrax. Boon revealed that while Saibot, Sektor, and Cyrax will be available at launch, the "celebrity crossover" characters will be released gradually after the DLC launch.
Meanwhile, the much-loved Animalities finishing moves will make a comeback as a free update for all Mortal Kombat 1 owners. These moves, which let characters turn into their spirit animals to finish off opponents, will be available with the release of the DLC.
"With Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, we’re looking forward to an exciting second year of content that will continue the cinematic story, add more fighters, and bring back popular game features," Boon said in Warner Bros. Games' statement regarding the content expansion. “The expansion marks the long-awaited return of Animalities, which will be a free content update for all Mortal Kombat 1 players and a token of appreciation for our amazing community.”
