Recreating a Procedural Houdini Setup with Moving Paper Lines in Blender

Pranav Pradi called Geometry Nodes a "mini Houdini."

3D Artist Pranav Pradi showcased this mind-blowing visualization of paper lines following the pen, which was created using Blender.

The artist drew inspiration from a similar Houdini work by Artist Aidiniotisv, crafted using Vellum and COPs, and recreated it in Blender. Pradi shared that they enjoyed figuring out how to "translate that node logic into Blender" to replicate that stunning effect.

Houdini is considered an industry-standard software for procedural visualizations, and recreating its flowing, mesmerizing effects might be a hard task. Pradi explains that the main principle of creating the setup was "to think in terms of Houdini." "Proceduralism is key," he said, and called Blender's procedural modifier system, Geometry Nodes, a "mini Houdini."

Pranav Pradi previously showed other stunning Blender works, such as this time-lapse with Blender's default cube transforming into a realistic 3D model of an American retro car and a cute visualization of sentient rickshaws, inspired by Pixar's Cars series:

Blender 5.3 is currently in Beta until November 4. The release is planned for November 10. The new 5.3 version will add several new options, including native Gaussian Splatting support, native dispersion support, new nodes for creating custom material lighting, and more.
