Sega has officially unveiled its long-teased reboot of the classic arcade racing series with a trailer shown at the XBOX Game Showcase 2026. The game is scheduled to launch in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
You'll once again play as Axel as he pursues mysterious villains who have stolen his taxi. Along the way, he travels the world, tracking down the culprits while also helping everyday passengers reach their destinations. There are also mini-games, extreme driving challenges, multiplayer modes, a wide variety of vehicles, and customization options, all wrapped in bold, vibrant arcade-style visuals. Leaning heavily into nostalgia, the soundtrack includes music from The Offspring.

However, the excitement surrounding the announcement was soon met with controversy. On the game's Steam page, Sega disclosed that generative AI had been used in its development, which sparked backlash and concern among fans online.
"At SEGA Corporation, we utilize generative AI as a support tool for developers, aiming to provide better content to our users and enable developers to focus more on creative tasks.
We have used such generative AI support tools during development of Crazy Taxi: World Tour. No AI was used in reference to the performers in the game."
Game Informer reached out to Sega for clarification, and the company stated that generative AI was "used to support" its teams during the development of background assets. Sega emphasized that "assets generated were still subject to review by the development team", and "no AI was used in reference to the performers in the game."
That comes as no surprise, as many studios across the industry are increasingly adopting generative AI, whether openly disclosed or used for "placeholder assets". In addition to Crazy Taxi, Sega also has plans to reboot several of its classic franchises: Golden Axe, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Jet Set Radio.
