Take a look at fixedcow's game development journey.
Game developer fixedcow and their team are inviting you to jump on a train and enjoy this winter forest in their beautiful 2D scene that looks wonderfully 3D thanks to the parallax effect that the creator implemented.
The parts were placed on the same Z-axis and separated by Sorting Layers in Unity, "and we split multiple tree layers and terrain layers to build depth/parallax. In production we actually used close to twenty layers; in hindsight, around ten would’ve sold the look just fine."
This Unity-made environment is part of fixedcow's upcoming game, which, unfortunately, doesn't have many details online. You, however, can follow the development journey on Reddit, where the creator occasionally shares new footage and asks for feedback.
Parallax can make wonders, as we've seen many times on 80 Level. You can grab a Blender add-on with this illusion or create your own.
