Xbox Is Working with AMD to Build Next Generation of Consoles

As well as other devices and cloud services.

Xbox

Microsoft confirmed that it is working with AMD to build the next generation of Xbox first-party devices and cloud, including consoles. In a post on X/Twitter, Xbox president Sarah Bond said that it had signed a “strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices.”

“At Xbox, our vision is for you to play the games you want with the people you want, anywhere you want,” she shared. “That’s why we’re investing in our next-generation hardware lineup across console, handheld, PC, cloud, and accessories.”

Together with AMD, Xbox will advance the state of the art in gaming Silicon to "deliver the next generation of graphics innovation, to unlock a deeper level of visual quality and immersive gameplay and player experiences, enhanced with the power of AI, all while maintaining compatibility with your existing library of Xbox games."

This aligns with Xbox's plan to share its games with other platforms. Bond added that this collaboration is “about building you a gaming platform that’s always with you, so you can play the games you want across devices, anywhere you want.” One of the steps in this strategy is teaming up with Microsoft Windows to “ensure that Windows is the number one platform for gaming.”

Rumors of the next Xbox console have been around for years. According to a 2023 leak, it should be powered by ARM64 or x64 (Zen 6), with AMD's Navi 5-based GPU, scheduled for 2028, although it could have changed many times since then.

Redditor Crusader II Elessar collected all the rumors, leaks, and facts in a lengthy post. There, they recalled that Bond established a team dedicated to preserving players' libraries last year, and Phil Spencer talked about Xbox games appearing on more than just one store.

Later, Jez Corden reported that Xbox was targeting 2027 for its next-gen devices, also mentioning a handheld – something that has recently been announced in collaboration with ASUS.

At CES 2025, Microsoft's VP of Xbox Gaming Jason Ronald said that the company is focused on "putting you and your library at the center of the experience regardless of how you bought the game, how you access the game."

Crusader also mentions that Microsoft is working on next-gen Xbox cloud systems and, once again, wants to unify Xbox libraries.

It looks like AMD has a plan to finally overpower Intel and NVIDIA, grabbing a place in gaming devices. Aside from the next Xbox, it is involved in ROG Xbox Ally and Valve's rumored home console. Moreover, it is said PlayStation 6 will have AMD's UDNA architecture.
