3ds Max 2027.2 Released with Native Gaussian Splat Support

Check out what's new in Autodesk's latest 3ds Max release.

3ds Max 2027.2 is out, bringing a range of updates, including support for editing Gaussian Splats, a new Point Object type, a new Point Instance modifier, and more.

Probably the most exciting new option in the software is native Gaussian Splat (3DGS) support, which provides options for importing an environment or a representation of individual objects, rendering, and editing Gaussian Splats. 3DGS data can be imported in PLY, SPZ, and LCC formats, previewed in an ActiveShade window, and edited using the new Point modifiers or existing 3ds Max tools.

Renderer Arnold for Max 5.9.3.0 with support for rendering 3D Gaussian Splats, improved denoiser, new Shader to RGBA and tone zones nodes for non-photorealistic rendering, faster GPU scene updates, etc.

The Point Object type allows editing 3DGS data or creating point data from scratch using the new point data manipulation modifiers and object type, while the Point Instance modifier enables true render-time instancing and helps create highly complex scenes from organized data sets such as forests and grasslands (does not support Point Cloud objects or particle data)

The revamped Smart Bevel in the 2027.2 release corrects various known issues and produces better output with improved speed and reliability.
