A 127-Year-Old Painting of a Blind Man Recreated in 3D

Kushaan Chavda has showcased a detailed 3D take on Gustav Klimt's 1896 "Der Blinde" portrait.

3D Artist Kushaan Chavda, who specializes primarily in creating realistic assets for VFX and games, has recently presented The Blind Man, a realistic 3D portrait based on "Der Blinde", an 1896 painting by Gustav Klimt, an Austrian Symbolist painter whose other works include such masterpieces as The Kiss and The Embrace.

According to the artist, he found particular inspiration in the model's distinctive character and the way Klimt employs lighting to highlight the model's features. To recreate the character in 3D, the author utilized an assortment of tools, including Maya, ZBrush, Mudbox, Marvelous Designer, Substance 3D Painter, XGen, Arnold, Mari, Nuke, 3D Scan Store textures, a modified HDRI from Poly Haven, and light textures from Cave Academy.

"I was immediately drawn to the unique character of the model and how Klimt uses lighting to accentuate his features," commented the creator. "I took the main concept from his painting and interpreted the details to bring the painting to life in CG. It was a great learning experience in lighting and LookDev."
