An Abandoned City Environment Made in Unreal Engine 5

The artist utilized ZBrush, Maya, Substance 3D Painter, and Megascans to create assets for the scene.

3D Environment Artist Andrey Egorov has unveiled Abandoned City – a new fantastic scene with strong The Last of Us and I Am Legend vibes. The scene depicts a post-apocalyptic-looking city center with deserted buildings, forgotten cars, and tons of vegetation scattered all across. According to the artist, the goal of the project was to test out UE5 and its Lumen feature.

To create assets for the environment, Andrey used a combination of Maya and Substance 3D Painter. The buildings were made from modular parts with vertex paint, while cars and smaller props were created using face weight, transferred normals, tileable textures, and masks for blending. For vegetation, the artist used ZBrush and some textures from Megascans. The environment was rendered and lit in Unreal Engine 5.
