Artist Shows Agony in 3D Self-Portrait
A strong work by Vladimir Kudryashov.
Artist Vladimir Kudryashov created a self-portrait that signifies what every artist who's been stuck at some point will understand deeply. The face of the character is frozen in a grotesque grimace to fit Kudryashov's study, which was focused on extreme facial expression and emotional tension.
"The goal of this project was to explore realistic facial anatomy, skin deformation, and high-frequency details under dramatic lighting. An additional focus was placed on studying color theory and skin color variation through fully hand-painted textures."
The portrait was sculpted in ZBrush, with the head and pore details fully hand-sculpted. The textures and maps were hand-painted in ZBrush, and textures from Texturing XYZ were applied only as sculpting references for pore detail on the hands.
