Blender Add-On That Instantly Turns Rough Sketches Into 3D Poses

Sketch2Pose is intended to serve as a foundation for your blocking process.

As proNano, the creator of Sketch2Pose, explained, their goal was to speed up the blocking stage, especially when you already have a clear reference in mind but don't want to spend 10 minutes adjusting every individual bone.

Sketch2Pose is a Blender add-on that allows you to sketch a simple stick figure and instantly turn it into a 3D pose. It analyzes stroke direction and joint angles to automatically reconstruct the form.

It's not intended as a one-click final solution, but rather as a starting point for your process. Regarding how this works technically, the developer is planning to release an in-depth breakdown video soon, but here's what they've shared so far.

"It's a mix of computer vision and mathematics vision. The algorithm analyzes the 2D Grease Pencil strokes to identify key joints (shoulders, elbows, knees, etc.) using colors and their relative positions in 3D space.

Then, it maps those coordinates to the rig bones using a custom solver I developed to handle depth estimation. It basically tries to find the most "anatomically logical" 3D pose that matches your 2D drawing."

Although Sketch2Pose is automatic, it also includes optional correction checkboxes for finer control. It has been tested with Rigify rigs, Mixamo rigs, and custom rigs.

proNano is already working on new features and has teased upcoming IK support. If you'd like to follow the progress, you can subscribe to the developer's YouTube channel and purchase Sketch2Pose here.

If you're looking for more cool Blender tools, check out Light Painter by ShaderError. It's a new Blender add-on that lets you paint light directly in the viewport, similar to how you would do it in Photoshop.

You can also purchase Sebastián Luna's super detailed gore shader and grab Ian Fontova's fantasy hut generator and Jörg Grubmüller's WrapKit.

Also, in case you missed it, Blender artists can now use V-Ray for free, even in commercial projects. Subscribe to our Newsletter, join our 80 Level Talent platform, and follow us on TwitterLinkedInTelegram, and Instagram, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
