Bungie: The Days Of Destiny 2 Cheat Makers Operating Without Fear Of Consequences Are Over
The company is taking legal action against the Ring-1 cheat creators.
Bungie is serious about fighting cheaters and those who enable them. After explaining its stance on it last year, the company has won several lawsuits, winning millions of dollars and shutting down sites where you could buy cheat programs.
"The days of Destiny 2 cheaters being free to engage in a wholesale assault on the Destiny 2 game and its community without fear of consequences are over," that's how Bungie begins its latest case, this time against the Ring-1 cheat makers.
This is not a new battle though. According to Torrentfreak, Bungie went for Ring-1 back in 2021, accusing the creators of copyright infringement, trafficking in circumvention devices contrary to the DMCA, trademark violations, and unfair competition. Then, three out of four defendants answered the call and paid the company about $600,000. The fourth, however, didn't respond, so Bungie requested $2.2 million in damages. The court denied it though, and the Ring-1 website remained untouched.
Now, Bungie is out for blood again, this time with 10 defendants and 40 "John Does".
"Bungie’s litigation, and litigation victories, have not gone unnoticed; they have been widely covered in the gaming industry press and beyond. Defendants, in other words, have been more than placed on notice that their conduct is tortious, wrongful, and in fact illegal, and have had every opportunity to voluntarily cease it."
Knowing this, the cheat makers continued their work, "secure in the belief that they can avoid consequences for it." But no more, according to Bungie, and I believe it, at least in this case, considering its prior wins and tireless hunt for cheaters. The defendants face allegations of copyright infringement, Civil RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations), circumvention of technical measures in violation of the DMCA, violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, Breach of Contract, Interference with Contractual Relations, and Civil Conspiracy.
