Digital Artist and Motion Designer Kay Hilman recently shared a breakdown of the creation of his animated film NOXIOUS using Blender.
In the video, Kay Hilman covers the entire production process, specifically discussing combining projection mapping with a custom Grease Pencil workflow and re-scoping and surviving a production crunch. The breakdown also includes a guest segment from the film's composer, Mikael Umarov, detailing the soundscape and score.
The film is Kay Hilman's 2024 graduation project, which took the artist two years to complete. "Creating this short was an intense journey of exploring the boundaries between technical artistry, custom workflows, and cinematic storytelling within Blender," Hilman shares. "For a long time, the pressure of releasing it held me back, but looking back at what I accomplished, together with help from other artists, in such a short production window, this film deserves to be seen."
To create the fantastic visuals, the artist combined hand-painted textures, Blender's Outline modifier, and "geo-node tricks to get lines to stick on surfaces".
