Coraline Lyu has leveraged Maya and Substance 3D software to recreate one of the shots from Porco Rosso in 3D.
3D Environment Texture Artist at Naughty Dog Coraline Lyu has recently paid tribute to one of Studio Ghibli's timeless classics, showcasing an absolutely marvelous 3D recreation of one of the shots from the 1992 animated film Porco Rosso.
Powered by Unreal Engine, Coraline's version of the scene looks extremely close to the original down to the smallest details, featuring awe-inspiring stylized foliage and hand-made NPR 3D materials. According to the artist, the scene was made using Maya, Substance 3D Painter, Substance 3D Designer, and SpeedTree.
"This project presented a lot of challenges, including extensive practice with stylized material and handling stylized foliage," commented the creator. "Working on stylized foliage elements was a fascinating aspect of this project. I focused on ensuring that these foliage seamlessly blended into the environment, avoiding the mesh of making them appear overly fake and thereby keeping the players immersed in the atmosphere."
"Among the challenges I faced, making the texture of the trunk proved to be the most challenging," Coraline added. "This tree trunk was distinct from the conventional stylized tree designs, boasting a lot of intricate details that harmoniously melded with the overall composition."
