Crimson Desert has officially surpassed 2 million copies sold within its first 24 hours across PC, PS5, and Xbox, marking a strong commercial debut for Pearl Abyss’ long-awaited action-adventure title.
The game had been in development for well over seven years, originally beginning life as a prequel story for MMO Black Desert Online before pivoting to a single-player open world game. So far, critic reviews are generally quite positive (it's 80 overall on OpenCritic as of the time of this writing), but Steam user reviews after day one are sitting at 'Mixed' so far, due primarily to varying performance results.
The launch represents a major moment for the studio, which is attempting to expand beyond Black Desert into a broader single-player, console-focused market. Early momentum was already evident pre-launch, with the game topping Steam’s global sales charts and exceeding 3 million wishlists ahead of release on Steam alone. Concurrent player counts peaked at over 239,000 on Steam for launch day, which is an undeniably strong debut for a full-priced premium single-player only title—particularly since that doesn't account for console players.
Folks are very pleased you can pick up and hold the chonky cats:
A major driver of the game's early interest is the studio’s proprietary BlackSpace Engine, which underpins Crimson Desert’s dense open world and mind-blowing dynamic systems. Technical analysis highlights several standout features:
Fully dynamic ray-traced lighting and global illumination
Seamless transitions between large-scale battles, biomes, and scripted events
High-density environments with reactive weather and physics systems
According to early evaluations, the engine is capable of maintaining high visual fidelity even at scale, and it is admittedly rare to sustain this level of ray tracing in an open-world environment.
Personally, I spent a few hours playing the game on PS5 Pro last night, mostly in Performance Mode to maximize framerates, and I was delighted to see that PlayStation's latest PSSR technology must have been in full effect. Despite running in Performance Mode, the visual fidelity looked fantastic.
Check it out for yourself. The image I've included below was just captured directly from my PS5 Pro using the Share button in Performance Mode:
The game’s visual ambition and systemic complexity are widely praised, but it will be interesting to see how opinions evolve as patches roll out, especially for base console versions.
For developers, the launch offers a compelling case study: a proprietary engine pushing cutting-edge rendering and simulation at scale, while still grappling with the realities of optimization across platforms.
