Lead Animator Shares WIP Scene of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced
It looks really cool!
Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is a remake of the 2013 original game, and it became the biggest Steam launch in the history of the franchise, surpassing 99,000 concurrent players a day after its release.
And now Ave Espelita, Lead Animator at Ubisoft Philippines, shared a behind-the-scenes animation of the game, where he showed how they improved the action of rope-sliding.
He explained that in previous games, characters grabbed the rope bare-handed to slide down, which, realistically, would have caused rope burn.
So the solution in Black Flag Resynced was to give Kenway a second rope to grip, avoiding the injury altogether. Espelita also added more side-to-side movement while swinging, achieving a more chaotic pirate look.
Espelita also led the creation of three takedowns for the El Tiburón boss fight in the remake, driving fight choreography, mocap direction, benchmark animations, and camera direction.
Another contribution he made to the game is a custom animation to convey Kenway's swinging movement when the platform collapses.
