Metal Gear Solid Successor Moves to Xbox After PlayStation & Kojima Productions Part Ways

Hideo Kojima has found a new partner for PHYSINT.

Kojima Productions, Xbox

PlayStation Studios has stepped away from its collaboration with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT, and the project has now moved to Xbox.

According to Kojima Productions, PlayStation Studios unexpectedly informed the studio in mid-June that it was canceling the project. Determined to keep working on PHYSINT, the team spent the following three months searching for a new partner and decided to team up with Xbox. Kojima Productions confirmed that development of the game is in force.

PlayStation, in a separate statement, said the difficult decision to step away came after careful consideration. The company added that it continues to admire Hideo Kojima's vision for the game and looks forward to future collaboration with him and his studio.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma welcomed the partnership:

"Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We're honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX."

Kojima also shared his own thoughts on the shift:

"This expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD. As we move forward with the development of PHYSINT, we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world."

Physint is described as a "next-generation action-espionage game" and viewed as a spiritual successor to the Metal Gear Solid series. At the game's 2024 announcement, Kojima described the project as the "culmination" of his work. Its cast includes Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe, and an experimental CG model of Hamabe was showcased before:

We know a little more about Kojima's other WIP project, a cinematic horror OD, also known as Overdoseannounced in 2023. It will be a chilling horror game with a mechanic for players who are too afraid to tone down the scary parts.
