PS5 Emulation Makes Early Progress With Demon's Souls Remake Booting
The race is on.
There have been many recent changes across the gaming industry that have left a lot of players unhappy and concerned. In particular, Sony's decision to end physical game disc production has been seen by many as a major blow to the game preservation movement, which has gained increasing attention in recent years through initiatives such as Stop Killing Games. It's all part of the wider transition toward digital-only distribution, a trend that has long raised concerns about true ownership, the disappearance of resale value, and the need for constant internet access.
Console emulation is an extremely difficult challenge: even PlayStation 4 emulation is not as advanced as many would like, and running PlayStation 5 games on a PC is obviously still in the realm of science fiction. However, recent developments have given enthusiasts even more reason to speed up these efforts. Currently, there are at least two PS5 emulators in active development: SharpEmu and KytyPS5.
Nothing groundbreaking yet, but the most advanced of these projects appears to be SharpEmu. It can reportedly already run an actual game, Dreaming Sarah, a 2D adventure platformer, and among PS5 exclusives, it can display the startup screen of Demon's Souls Remake. According to its GitHub page, SharpEmu is capable of loading PS5 executable files, executing native CPU instructions, and partially handling kernel-level functionality. Its main development platform is Windows.
KytyPS5 is another PlayStation 5 emulator that reportedly manages to boot Silent Hill: The Short Message and several other games. The project is based on a modified version of the original Kyty project.
Of course, another big reason people are interested in PS5 emulation is the hope of playing Grand Theft Auto VI before the official PC release. Sadly, there's basically no chance it will reach the level of accuracy needed to run such a demanding game anytime soon. Still, the idea of being able to play PS5 exclusives that aren't expected to come to PC anytime soon is pretty exciting.
