PlayStation 6's memory and storage cost reportedly amounted to more than $680.
According to a Eurogamer report, the alleged news comes from Kepler_L2, who claimed on NeoGAF that RAM and NAND alone cost over $680, responding to a forum user who argued that, even if a BoM estimate were 20-30% too high, subsidies could make a $680 PS6 launch possible. Earlier, Kepler_L2, whose prior assumptions about hardware proved true, said the console's materials might cost $1,000, up from their March estimate of around $760.
The release of PlayStation 6 was previously delayed by Sony to 2028 or 2029, reportedly due to a memory chip shortage. The console was generally expected to launch in 2027, but even before the reported delay, there was a suggestion that the release might be postponed, as Sony was believed to expect the PS5's lifecycle to be extended.
Unfortunately, the memory crisis, allegedly started with Micron prioritizing RAM supply for AI companies, causing price hikes (some RAM options cost more than modern GPUs) and device release delays, isn't ending. In April, Nikkei Asia shared a report that the memory chip shortage is expected to persist into next year and likely extend even further. Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat also said the memory issues were bigger than the team expected, and the prices for the Steam Machine were also heavily affected by the memory chip shortage.
