Realistic 3D Recreation of Gandalf the Grey Made From Scratch

The portrait was made without scans using Maya, ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter, and Arnold.

3D Character Artist Nguyen Tran has unveiled an incredibly-realistic 3D recreation of The Lord of the Rings' Gandalf the Grey, based on Ian McKellen's depiction of the character in Peter Jackson's LotR and The Hobbit movies.

According to the artist, the model was made entirely from scratch without any scans using Maya for modeling, ZBrush for sculpting details, Substance 3D Painter for texturing, and Arnold for rendering. Additionally, the author utilized Marvelous Designer to set up the robes and XGen to create the wizard's beard and hair. As stated by Nguyen, it took nearly two years to finalize the artwork and achieve the final result.
