In a statement published on Monday, Riot has officially confirmed that the studio is eliminating 530 employees globally, which is 11% of its workforce. This is a significant amount of laid-off staff, and according to the company, the job cuts will mostly affect "teams outside of core development."
"For most of our history, we've managed to avoid days like this, but this decision is critical for the future of Riot. This isn't to appease shareholders or to hit a quarterly earnings number—it's a necessity," reads the statement.
The company also stated that its main focus will be directed at internal development and its core live games, such as League of Legends, VALORANT, Teamfight Tactics, and Wild Rift. The vision is "more ambitious than ever," so the studio promises to deliver more content, features, and various updates.
As for Legends of Runeterra, because of the "financial challenges since launch" and "costing significantly more to develop and support than it generates", the company will shorten its team and will focus on The Path of Champions.
Along with downsizing its workforce, Riot is shutting down its third-party publishing label Riot Forge right after the launch of Bandle Tale: A League of Legends Story.
Earlier this year, Twitch, Google, YouTube, Pixar, Duolingo, and more joined the list of companies laying off their employees.
