See How Artists Recreate This 2D Spinning Ball That Looks 3D
Reverse: 1999's Live2D tech is having its moment.
Over the weekend, this post on X/Twitter showcasing the new Flutterpage design from the Reverse: 1999 and Atomic Heart collaboration went viral because of one small detail: a ball that spins endlessly while giving the illusion of being fully 3D. The effect is surprisingly satisfying to watch.
Reverse: 1999 is a gacha RPG developed by Bluepoch that uses Live2D. MiiKO, whose work we've featured before on our site, shared their Live2D take on this ball, mentioning that they used culling to create the effect:
SeterMD also took on the challenge, recreating the ball in After Effects, the software he uses for his own awesome animations:

We've covered quite a few cool Live2D projects in the past that try to push the software toward a 3D look. Check out Live2Doll's full-body 3D-style models in Live2D, their fake 3D hand-tracking system, Sumireno's 3D-looking halo, and a setup that combines a 3D body model with a Live2D head:
