Sony Acquires Machine Learning Company To "Enhance Gameplay"
Its team will be joining Sony's R&D division, the Visual Computing Group.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed that it has acquired Cinemersive Labs, a UK-based company specializing in machine learning and computer vision. The announcement states:
"Following the acquisition, the Cinemersive Labs team will join SIE's Visual Computing Group (VCG) and contribute to our broader efforts in advancing state of the art visual computing within games. This includes applying machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals, improve rendering techniques, and unlock new levels of visual fidelity for players."
Cinemersive Labs develops AI technology that turns 2D images into 3D volumes, powering Parallax, their VR app that lets you explore photos in full 3D. We know that Sony has been putting a lot of focus on machine learning to boost graphics performance on the PlayStation 5 and upcoming consoles.
Lately, most of the news around Sony has been about closures: Sony Pictures Entertainment shut down Pixomondo, and earlier, PlayStation closed Dark Outlaw Games and Bluepoint Games.
