Take a Closer Look at How Materials for Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred Were Made

The materials are very impressive. Take a closer look at the creation of the expansion.

Rachel Bews, Material Artist, shared on her ArtStation some of the material work she did for Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred expansion.

"Most of these you'll find in dungeons in-game and in the campaign quests. As well as some of the sky cinematic shots, which were a fun challenge to figure out in the engine," said the artist.

She worked on the initial ideation, terrains, asset materials, decals, and set dressing of the sky "assets"/clouds/sun/misc, but this was also teamwork between different Lead Artists, Environment Artist, Prop Artist, and others that focused on lighting and VFX.

The materials were created using Substance 3D Designer, Substance 3D Painter, and Houdini.

The Lord of Hatred expansion was released on April 28, 2026, and it focuses on Mephisto. It introduced the Paladin and Warlock classes and offers a new campaign. So far, it has been very well received by fans.

You can see how some of these materials look in-game below:

You can also check out some of the creatures that were created for the expansion that we shared a few days ago.
