Tutorial: Creating Lightning Strike FX in Houdini & Unreal Engine

SideFX Labs showed how to use its tools and Niagara particle system to make a lightning strike attack effect.

Benjamin Christensen from SideFX Labs released a free tutorial series on how to create a lightning strike attack effect using Houdini, Unreal Engine, and SideFX Labs' tools. The tutorial includes 9 videos and features step-by-step breakdowns for the different elements, including Unreal Niagara particle system, Blueprints, Houdini lightning generator, RBD sims, Vellum grains, pyro smoke sims, flipbooks, and terrain-adaptive vertex animations.

It shows how to make:

  1. Charge Strike
  2. Ground Strikes
  3. Smoke
  4. Vellum Grains
  5. VAT Destruction
  6. Ground Destruction Texture
  7. Flares and Shockwaves
  8. Glowing Sword
  9. Terrain-Adaptive VAT

The tutorial is made for intermediate-level users and requires Houdini 19.
