Tutorial on How to Create Hair Textures for Games

Check out a walkthrough of the whole hair generation process in Maya.

Sathish Koththolla shared a detailed 1-hour tutorial covering the whole production of the hair cards for games from start to finish using Autodesk Maya.

The tutorial focuses on achieving the realistic hair texture inspired by Post Malone’s hairstyles. The production process is recorded in real-time and includes the narration for each step, including:

  • Cleaning out the card before texturing
  • Adjusting the density and the count, creating the curve
  • Simulating the haircut on the ends
  • Working with height, normal, albedo, and flow maps

This tutorial will be a good choice for both beginners and experienced artists since the video also has some interface explanations and a few additional tips and tricks.

If you want to dive into the hair generation process even deeper, then we suggest you read an interview with Andrew Krivulya where he discussed CGI and real-time hair workflows.
