Artist Showcases Self-Portrait in Funny Pokémon Scene

Get him, Poliwag!

I think creating self-portraits is a difficult task because you know yourself best and will always find something not quite fitting. But Leandro Leijnen made a really well-done 3D recreation of himself in a style that reminds me of How to Train Your Dragon.

Moreover, he built a whole story around the model, combining it with Pokémon. In this piece, Leijnen tries to catch Poliwag but gets soaked instead.

The artist admits that his first models of Pokémon were "really ugly," but now that he has some experience, he's finally having fun and can add some detail and context to his creations.

First Catch was created with a variety of tools, including Maya, ZBrush, Houdini, SpeedTree, Substance 3D Designer, and Substance 3D Painter.

The rig for the character was done by Trystan Bleuven.
